HI guys,

It's been a while since I've written anything in the journal thingy, which really isn't a good thing if you ask me. A lot has been happening with the classes I've been taking at the college, so I can't get to work on the Pokemon comic as I had planned. Then again I have to admit that I'm getting tired of this repeating process of starting a comic, yet not having the time or motivation to do it. So something needs to be done about it so there can be a competed fan comic at the end of this year. Time management and getting to bed earlier might assuage the problem. So I think if I manage my time things should go smoother with class work and the comic.

Speaking of comics, I noticed that there are a lot of groups on DA for comics and manga -it's the same word and meaning to me-.  However, I notice that there isn't a group for comic editors, or even one for comic writers.  It would be awesome if there were such a group, as the writing group could show samples on how a comic script is done. this would be a great idea, as all comics, novels, movies, need a decent story and plot before recorded action or art; as the art is the thing that depicts the story with the plot to move it. However I find that looking across the net for a freaking comic script isn't one of the easiest things there is. So if there were a group on DA for this, and  members give samples of how they wrote then others might get an idea of how to do it. Then the Manga editor group would also be great as the character's speech patterns and word choice could be critiqued. Then to mention the editor could also do some stuff like give out tips on page composition, if certain panels/frames are needed in that spot. Neiter of these groups are a complete thought, but it would be interesting if they did exist.

the only problems that I see with groups like these is how to get people to be active in such a thing. Not the kind of active of where "one" posts useless one worded cliches, but useful comments that benefit the artist and their work. Although I also have to admit that is sometimes hard to write up a few sentences with thought, but if is a sentence with some thought in it than it's useful.

Sorry, if most of the stuff up there doesn't make sense but it's one in the morning over here, so it may get a nice edit a little later on.

Time management strategy 1) don't sleep at all...

...hey, it works for me =P

As for doing comic scripts: I'm finding it something that I'm just trying to learn as I go along. I've got a vaugue inkling of an overarching storyline and a resonably well laid out plan of whatever current arc I happen to be on. Scripts I'm writing chapter by chapter, trying to incorperate tips others give me from the previous chapter...

You know, You're the second person to have said, "don't sleep at all!":D

I see, so it might be a better idea to just learn as go with the writing of a script. Then you think of the start, middle, and end of the story arc. I think that sounds like a good idea, and to use the tips from other people from previous chapters would help as well.

Hey, have you ever thought of writing your thoughts and what happens in the day to use as fodder for your comic?:? Even normal daily tasks or the comics you read can be twisted into humorous things ya know.

...all the time mate =P In fact my characters Jesse, Dan and Amy are pretty much an outlet for my own jaded opinions on the world, odd observations, funny anecdotes and such. I don't post so many illustrations of them on here anymore, but there's plenty of sketches. One day I might compile all of them and post some.

As to the script... I'm treating the whole fan-comic exercise as a learning process. Sure, some talented and crazy-fast individuals (*47ness I'm looking at you here) can afford to go back, re-write and re-draw till they get what they want. Unforntately I'm neither so I make do with what I put out and try and improve for next time. I find that in terms of script though, releasing in chapters helps. Sure it takes awhile (I'm currently colouring the 6th page of mine, after almost 3 months work) but the time it takes you to draw the chapter also allows you to iron out script bugs. Here's what I'm doing, assuming I've got an idea of what's happening in the chapter and have assembled the cast members I need for that, done the concept sketch work etc.

- write the script out roughly. Everyone says what they need to say but not much more.
- 1st edit, go through again and start making people sound like themselves (for instance this means getting rid of Americanisms out of Jethro and Monty's speech and adding some British slang, and finding funnier, quirkier ways of saying stuff). This gives you enough to start drawing, figurer out pannels and how much page real-estate you'll need for speech bubbles.
- Once the rough script is done, start drawing. I usually do this in blocks of three or four pages. Thumbnails, then pencil then ink. As I'm doing this, if ideas for edits to the script occur, I add them in, and can change my drawing accordingly. Or, if I think of a better way to draw something, edit the script to fit that.
- Chapter of lineart done, re-edit the script again... minor changes only now, can't re-arrange pannels anymore.
- Colour (this is where I'm at now)
- Final script edit, add in speech bubbles and SFX to the comic.
- Edit in-comic now. Check the flow of text... and because I'm anal about these things: line spacing, kerning etc.
- Resize, save for web and post =P
